THE DREAM I was on this cliff edge. My path would clearly end in disaster. I could either decide to stay there or go backwards.

THE REALITY The dreamer was feeling suicidal and had recently started smoking again. He clearly could not achieve his desired goals. He was wanting to smoke but felt this was a move back. But he was in such as state that it was better to regroup and move back. This background information was clearly enough to trigger a dream. Dreams are often caused by poor mental health and suicidal feelings almost certainly cause a dream. A cliff edge is an excellent metaphor for suicidal feelings. The dream clearly shows the following feeling "I feel suicidal and I know I will have to change course or I will end up in hospital."
